The North Canberra Bears were unable to defend their 2016 George Tooke Shield Premiership but made a surprise grand final charge in the Youth League.

After claiming a memorable Premiership in 2016, the Bears’ title defence didn’t go as planned this season.

Having finished fourth on the ladder, the Bears started the finals series well with wins against Binalong and Boorowa. However, the Bears came unstuck in the preliminary final as they lost to the Harden Hawks 20-14 in a rematch of the 2016 grand final.

The Bears’ for and against reflected their position on the ladder as they were ranked fourth in both of these statistics.

The North Canberra Bears struggled for results in what was their first season in the League Tag Competition.

Despite this, the Bears managed two wins during the season including a memorable 44-0 win over the ADFA Knights.

The Bears had the 8th best attack and 9th best defence in the competition.

Having won only three games all season, North Canberra were close to completing a miracle as they won three consecutive finals matches to reach the grand final.

Unfortunately for the Bears, they ran into a dominate Harden Hawks outfit that completed an undefeated season with a 36-0 win.

Like their senior male counterparts, the Bears boasted the fourth best attack and defence in the competition.
