The West Belconnen Warriors and Tuggeranong Bushrangers remain undefeated while the Queanbeyan Blues bounced back in style.
Yass Magpies 19 (Tries: J Toppin 2, T Warner; Goals: J Toppin 2; Field Goal: C Rawlinson) d Woden Valley Rams 18 (Tries: K Vaetoe, S Ferry, T Hodge; Goals: R Leapai 2, M Geiger)
A Chris Rawlinson field goal helped the Yass Magpies secure a one-point win against the Woden Valley Rams at Phillip District Oval on Sunday afternoon.
Woden took the lead through Keb Vaetoe before the Jacob Toppin scored a double within two minutes to give the Magpies the lead.
The Rams started the stronger of the two sides after the break and drew level thanks to a Sean Maloney grubber hitting the upright and ricocheting into the path of Steve Ferry.
However, Yass co-captain Tommy Warner capatilised on a Jeff Morgan knock-on to regather the ball and score.
Chris Rawlinson slotted a field goal 15 minutes from fulltime to give the Magpies breathing space.
Woden fought valiantly and were rewarded when Tyson Hodge crossed the line from close range to narrow the margin to one point and set up a grandstand finish.
However, the Yass Magpies held on to claim their second consecutive win of the season.
Tuggeranong Bushrangers 26 (Tries: L Tuicakau, D Faaeteete, M Picker, N Vanisi, D Hickson; Goals: J Mitchell 2, L Oakley) Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 16 (Tries: P Cooke, M Dodson, K Mitwari; Goals: C Hart 2)
It didn’t take long for Michael Picker to haunt his former club as the Tuggeranong halfback set up Noa Vanisi for a try before scoring himself within the opening 20 minutes.
The Goulburn Workers lifted in the second half and reduced a 16 point deficit when Pat Cooke latched on to a Nick Cornish kick.
However, the Bushrangers put the result beyond doubt with a further two tries before Michael Dodson and Khoder Mitwari scored two late tries for the Bulldogs.
The result sees the Bushrangers remain undefeated and sees the Goulburn Workers suffer their first defeat of the season.
Queanbeyan Blues 56 (Tries: J Wheeler 4, T Campese, F Fainifo, L Manu, Z Patch, T Stevens, C Wynnik; Goals: T Campese 7, Z Patch) d Belconnen United Sharks 6 (Tries: J Mecham-Crane; Goals: A MacDonald)
The Queanbeyan Blues were held scoreless last week but looked a completely different side against the Sharks as they scored ten tries.
Terry Campese opened the scoring three minutes into the match on his return from suspension, while Jake Wheeler scored four tries of his own.
The Sharks, who had previously gone down narrowly in both of their matches to start the season, scored a consolation try in the dying moments when Jordan Mecham-Crane crossed the line.
West Belconnen Warriors 36 (Tries: R McQueen, H Brown, T Aroha-Tuinauvai, J Duffey, J Graham, T Moa, H Whatman; Goals: M Campbell 4) d Gungahlin Bulls 26 (Tries: D Aylott, D Low, B Scholes, J Scholes, B Wood; Goals: J Scholes 2, J Fa’amoe Iaone)
The West Belconnen Warriors sit at the top of the ladder after beating the Gungahlin Bulls at Raiders Belconnen.
Jackson Duffey and Nela Moa were amongst the try scorers as the Warriors raced to a 20-0 lead inside the opening the 20 minutes.
The Bulls hit back with tries either side of halftime before the two sides traded tries for the rest of the match.
However, the Gungahlin Bulls left themselves too much work to do as they fell to their third straight defeat.
