The Belconnen United Sharks have shown their intent for the 2019 season with the signing of former Canberra Raiders hooker, Glen Buttriss.
Buttriss said that he is excited to get started at the club and playing for his former Raiders teammate Scott Logan.
“To have a run in the Canberra competition next year is pretty exciting,” Buttriss said. “I played with Scott for a couple of years with the Canberra Raiders so I’ve got that connection but also there are a couple of other guys at the club from Cootamundra as well.
“The boys have had a couple of tough years at the Sharks so hopefully they can recruit a couple more players and we can have a good season in 2019.”
Buttriss joins the Sharks after spending the 2018 season as captain-coach for his hometown side, the Cootamundra Bulldogs.
In that time, the hooker dragged the side which has finished the two previous seasons with the wooden spoon, to a single point away from the finals.
Although the former Raiders player won’t be in an official coaching capacity at the club, Buttriss will be looking to work with the club’s juniors.
“I work a Melba-Copland High School and there are a lot of kids there that are involved with the Sharks juniors,” Buttriss said. “Hopefully, I can do a bit of work with the juniors and see them continue on with the seniors.”
Buttriss played 119 NRL matches for the Canberra Raiders between 2008 and 2015, before spending two seasons contracted to Mounties in the Intrust Super Premiership.
