Canberra Region Rugby League General Manager Mark Vergano met with Group 16 Chairman Allan Wilton in Bega to confirm the Monaro Trial for the 2018 Country Championships.
The trial will take place at the Bega Recreation Ground on Saturday 17th March as a side of selected Canberra Region players will take on their Group 16 counterparts for a place in the Monaro Ladies League Tag and Men’s Under 23 sides.
After a successful merger between the two groups earlier this year, the groups competed under the reformed banner of Monaro during the Country Championships.
Vergano believes the growing relationship between the two competitions was an important step in furthering grassroots rugby league in the area.
“It was great to travel to Bega to meet with Allan yesterday,” Vergano said. “The Group 16 competition is going from strength to strength and it is fantastic to see the proposed redevelopment of the sports facilities within the area.
“The way that the two competitions came together at such late notice this year to reform Monaro was extremely effective and now we are looking to consolidate our relationship moving forward.”
Having seen the success that Monaro had during this year’s Country Championships, Vergano is interested to see what next year’s sides can achieve.
“There are highly talented players in both the Canberra Region and Group 16,” Vergano said. “The Ladies League Tag competitions within Monaro continue to go from strength to strength and we are excited to able to provide an opportunity for these players to showcase their talent.
“In addition to this, the way the Under 23 Men’s side performed was outstanding and we, along with Group 16, wish to see young players within the Monaro Region to continue getting opportunities at a higher level.
Players selected to trial for Monaro will be contacted in early 2018.
