KFS Season Review: Yass Magpies

Katrina Fanning Shield

Position: 1st (Runners-up)
Win/Loss/Draw: 10-1-1
Points For: 353
Points Against: 102

The Yass Magpies were one of the season’s big improvers in 2018 as they finished top of the ladder to claim the Minor Premiership.

Having finished third in 2017 with a record of seven wins and five losses, Yass only lost a single match during the 2018 regular season.

The Magpies laid out their intent during the first half of the season as they won every match. This included a Round 3 30-14 win over Goulburn and a Round 7 22-12 over last year’s Premiers the Queanbeyan Blues. In beating the Blues, Yass became the first side to claim a Katrina Fanning Shield win against the Queanbeyan outfit.

Yass continued their winning ways before facing their first hurdle of the season in Round 10. The Magpies had a 10-10 draw against Goulburn which was followed by a 26-22 loss to the Queanbeyan Blues.

However Yass bounced back before finals with two wins to set up a Major Semi Final against the Blues. The Magpies eased to a 42-4 victory to set up a Grand Final match against Goulburn.

The Magpies edged their way to a 4-0 lead at halftime but succumbed to a 20-8 defeat after they had a player sent off early in the second half.

Season Highlight

Although the season ended in disappointing fashion for Yass, their improvement over the course of the last two years has been remarkable.

Claiming the Minor Premiership at the conclusion of Round 13 was the standout moment for the Yass in a season which had plenty of positives.
