Northern Rivers beat Monaro to claim U23’s Country Championships

The CRL Men’s Under-23’s and Ladies League Tag Country Championships came to an exciting conclusion today with Northern Rivers and Central Coast crowned ‘CRL Country Champions’.

Northern Rivers secured a memorable victory in the Men’s Under-23’s match, taking down defending champions Monaro 26-22 in a classic Country Championship Final.

Two late tries in the first-half to Michael Dwane and Benjamin O’Gorman saw Northern Rivers take a 14-10 lead into half-time, before Dwane grabbed his hat-trick just minutes into the second-half to set up a 20-10 lead.

Powerful tries to Tyson Greenwood and Cleveland McGhie saw Monaro level the scores, but it was Northern Rivers who sealed the victory with Kyle Kennedy scoring to reclaim the lead.

Northern Rivers forward Caleb Ziebel was named Man of the Match.

The Central Coast Roosters claimed back-to-back Ladies League Tag titles with a hard-fought 22-6 victory over the GSR Wests Tigers to kick-off the day, with Roosters five-eighth Sarah Dimech named Player of the Match.

The Tigers opened the scoring with a try to Kimberley Stevens, but were unable to keep the defending champions from finding their rhythm and scoring the next four tries of the match to seal the win.
