Season Preview: Goulburn Workers Bulldogs

After a couple of disappointing seasons, the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs will be looking to threaten the top four with new coach Adam Kyle at the helm.

Where they excel

A significant recruitment drive from the club has seen the Bulldogs sign what on paper looks to be a formidable front row pairing.

Fabien Paletua-Kiri joins the club for the season after spending the off-season with the Canberra Raiders, while Connor Brebner makes the move to Goulburn from the Raiders NYC side after playing for West Belconnen over the last two years.

The Bulldogs also scored plenty of points last year and Nick Cornish has been in good form for the Canberra Region U23’s so far this year.

Room to improve

While the Bulldogs scored plenty of points last year, their defence was one of the poorest in the competition.

A major influx of players and coaching staff should help the club address their issues in defence in the long term but Goulburn could be vulnerable, especially in the opening rounds as they get used to new combinations.

Coach’s comments

“We’ve spent a lot of pre-season trying to rebuild the culture of the club and actually doing whole club sessions so everyone gets a good feel for what we are about as coaching staff. We saw that defensively last year they conceded 400 points, they also scored 400 points but conceded too many. Our defence is something that we really worked on over pre-season.”- Adam Kyle

The rookie

“There’s a young kid that we’ve got, Jake Whittaker. He’s played a handful of First Grade games over the last couple of years. He’s a really big, strong and athletic kid who has really just trained the house down all pre-season. He’s asking really good questions about what he should be doing. We’re really excited to see how he develops this season.”- Adam Kyle
