Specsavers Katrina Fanning Shield Round 1 Preview

The Women’s Tackle competition starts this weekend, with four teams set to compete in the nine-round competition.

Bushpies vs UC Buffaloes

10:30am, Saturday 25th July, Phillip District Oval

The Bushpies will be looking to mark their first match together with a win over the UC Buffaloes on Saturday.

The Bushpies are a combined team of players from the Yass Magpies and the Tuggeranong Bushrangers.

Despite the disrupted season, the UC Buffaloes have been training well and are ready to go for the season.

They have lost six girls due to the COVID-19 situation, but have gained six new players. Mellissa Ings, Bec Halls, Bridgette Windsor and Sienna Bloor have all made the switch over from the Harden Hawks, while cousins Kiarna and Sharna Mitchell are also joining the team this season.

Queanbeyan Blues vs West Belconnen

10:40am, Saturday 25th July, Seiffert Oval

West Belconnen make their return to the competition, having not competed in the last two seasons.

They’ve come back with a new coach in Richard Robinson, and a side that includes juniors and a few players from other clubs.

Dzintra Jones and Katie Glover return to the side, having been part of the first West Belconnen KFS team three years ago.

The Queanbeyan Blues will be hoping to build on last season, having reached the semi-finals.

The Blues have lost some forwards, and five-eighth Taylor Thorpe is out for the season after having a knee reconstruction.

But the Blues have recruited well this season, with a couple of big additions. Sammie Wood returns to the side after a two year stint playing rugby union, where she played for the Brumbies and was selected in the Wallaroos squad.

Monaro representative Krystyana Haridemos joins the backline, while Queanbeyan Blues junior Gemma Vause will make her first appearance in the competition.
