Stunning second half sets up Yass win

A superb second half has seen the Yass Magpies maintain their unbeaten start to the season with a 28-8 win over the Valley Dragons at Raiders Belconnen on Friday night.

The Yass Magpies started brightly and threatened to score from the first set of the match but the Valley Dragons’ defence held firm.

Jess Howard broke the deadlock for Yass before Taylah Wright doubled the lead as she cut inside from the wing to wrong-foot the Dragons defence.

Not daunted by the competition leaders, the Valley Dragons piled pressure on the Magpies’ defence and scored when Sandra Dalton barged her way over the line.

The Magpies started the second half in electric fashion and Jacinta Murphy scored their third try of the evening after she latched onto a well-placed grubber before Eilish Winbank added another try minutes later.

Jess Howard scored her second of the evening on the back of the set play as the Magpies moved the ball quickly to the left before Samara Afele scored.

The Valley Dragons scored a consolation try right on fulltime as Zoe Podmore muscled her way over.

Yass Magpies 28 (Tries: J Howard 2, T Wright, J Murphy, E Winbank, S Afele; Goals: S Wright 2 ) Valley Dragons 8 (Tries: S Dalton, Z Podmore)
