The West Belconnen Warriors have maintained their undefeated start to the season with a scrappy 26-18 win against the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Greenway Oval.
The two sides went into the game undefeated and it was the Tuggeranong Bushrangers opened the scoring thanks to Francis Toetu. The centre capatalised when Warriors winger Matthew Campbell dropped the ball near his own try line to score.
Josh Mitchell doubled the Bushranger’s lead midway through the first half with a try from a dummy half run.
Gruber could have extended Tuggeranong’s lead 10 minutes later but the fullback couldn’t hold on to Atu Tupou’s offload.
West Belconnen utility Jacob Graham swung the momentum in his side’s direction with a sprint from dummy half to reduce the deficit at halftime to 6 points.
The Bushrangers looked to add the first points of the second half when Matt Gruber ran 80 meters down the sideline but Harry Whatman successfully chased down the Tuggeranong fullback.
Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai levelled the scores a couple of sets later before Bailey Litster crossed the line to give the Warriors the lead.
The Warriors lead lasted for 2 minutes as Noa Vanisi took advantage of a penalty and ran through the West Belconnen defence.
The Bushrangers continued to pile on pressure but the Warriors turned defence into attack when Aroha-Tuinauvai intercepted the ball before passing to Matt Campbell who sprinted down the touchline to score.
The West Belconnen Warriors sealed the win with four minutes to go when Ricky Fulivai scored in the corner after a Jackson Duffey basketball pass.
