Pre-season will be looking rather different for a few clubs in 2018, as the West Belconnen Warriors Nines Tournament kicks off on Friday 9th March.
The tournament, which will be hosted in conjunction with Raiders Belconnen, will provide Canberra with a festival of rugby league which will run for three days over the Canberra Day Long Weekend.
With the West Belconnen Warriors hosting a nines tournament many years ago, current Warriors coach Troy Thompson had the idea of reviving the competition at the end of the 2016 season.
After plenty of hard work at to get the idea off the ground, West Belconnen President Steve Kirby is looking forward to the upcoming event.
“We thought it was a good chance to start the competition up again and have our own pre-season tournament that we can make our own and build it,” Kirby said. “I think we’ve done a good job with what we are offering in terms of prize money for the event and I think that’s a big carrot for clubs to come and participate.”
With $14,500 prize money up for grabs, the event has already generated interest within teams from the Canberra region and surrounding areas.
Due to the popularity of the event so far, Kirby has urged clubs thinking about entering to nominate their interest as soon as possible.
“Each team is guaranteed three games and it’s a good chance for teams to bond before the start of the season,” Kirby said. “We’re trying to make it more of a fun atmosphere – not too serious – to make it enjoyable not only for the players but for anyone who is wanted to come and watch a bit of nines footy.”
