The West Belconnen have claimed the bragging rights in the Belconnen derby after they narrowly defeated the Belconnen United Sharks 18-16 at O’Connor on Saturday afternoon.
The Sharks, who haven’t claimed a First Grade win in over a year, dominated the early exchanges as their sizeable forward park made inroads.
However, the third placed West Belconnen Warriors were the first to score when hooker Joe Roberts crossed the line for an early try.
The Sharks weren’t disheartened and levelled the scores in the 33rd minute when Sonny Tupuola barged over the line.
The Warriors went into the break the happier of the two sides as Ryley Thomas finished off an excellent 90 meter team try in the dying moments of the half.
New Belconnen Sharks halfback Toby Westcott set up James Butz for a try under the posts with a perfectly placed chip over the Warriors defence, before a Jordan Mecham-Crane try out side gave the Sharks a four point lead in the 60th minute.
Their lead lasted under two minutes as Harry Whatman scored under the posts before Matthew Campbell kicked the conversion.
As the weather worsened, the quality of football remained steady as a tense finale ensued.
The West Belconnen Warriors defence held on, as the side managed to successfully bounce back from their Round 7 defeat a fortnight ago.
