The Yass Magpies have announced former Tuggeranong Bushrangers captain-coach Jarrad Teka as Head Coach for the 2018 season.
“I’m very pleased to be back in the Canberra competition,” Teka said. “Yass did really well under the guidance of Steve and Scott Naughton, and I’m looking forward to taking the helm.”
With the Naughton’s stepping down from coaching to focus on playing and their professional careers, the Magpies looked to appoint Teka after his impressive work with the Tumut Blues in Group Nine.
During his sole season with the Blues, Teka took Tumut from a last-placed finish in 2016 to a preliminary final this year.
“There was no pressure going into the role with Tumut, but with what Yass achieved last year, there is quite a bit of expectation,” Teka said. “It’s going to be a challenge, and I think it’ll be a good challenge.”
Moving from Tumut to Yass with Teka are Jacob McGrath and Group Nine leading points scorer, Jacob Toppin.
With Yass managing to retain the majority of the squad from the 2017 season, the additions of McGrath at lock and Toppin at hooker add further quality to the team’s squad.
“They know my game plan, so that’s going to help myself and the club,” Teka said.
The Yass Magpies finished third in the Austbrokers Canberra, Canberra Raiders Cup in 2017 in what was their second season back in the competition.
